Multidisciplinary Engineering Design Program

Expectations

Thank you for your interest and willingness to participate in the multidisciplinary engineering design program! We hope you have an engaging and rewarding experience. Up to date information on the classes and the program, including the syllabuses can be found on this website http://multidesign.engineering.iastate.edu.

  1. Student and team expectations

Each student team is expected to have a weekly advisor meeting plus additional team or subgroup meetings and independent work. Every team member is expected to spend approximately 10 hours per week outside of class on the project. The team is expected to self-organize and take maximum advantage of all members' strengths. The team submits a weekly report which lists overall progress as well as each team member's individual tasks and accomplishments. Engr 466 teams submit and present a project plan early in the semester. Both Engr 466 and 467 teams submit and present a final report at the end of the semester. See Industrial review panel for scheduling.

Reports should be accessible on this webserver: Click on "Current teams" then "View Reports". You will have to use your ISU netid and be registered as team member, client, or advisor to access the reports.

  2. Faculty advisor expectations

As advisor to a 466/467 team you play one of the most important roles in ensuring project success and good student experience. It is essential that you come to the project with an open mind and let the team develop their own concept and solution. Your role is to guide the team toward its goal, making sure the team makes real progress and helping overcome obstacles.

Advisors to 466/467 teams are expected to have a weekly one hour meeting with the team. Let the course staff know if you will have to miss a week so we can try to arrange a guest advisor. As advisor, you are expected to track the progress of the team, assist with technical problems, and help guide the team to other university and off-campus resources to help solve their problems. In addition, you are responsible for signing off on team purchase requests. Your attendance at the industrial review panel presentations (Industrial review panel) is appreciated. You are expected to provide feedback at the end of the semester for grading purposes. You are also requested to submit a weekly report listing major issues the team must resolve.
(Click on Current teams, then ``submit reports'' for your team, then ``individual weekly report''. Fill out the ``Issues'' box and hit ``submit''. The team will then include your input in their weekly report.)

  3. Client expectations

Clients of 466/467 teams are expected to provide their input and vision, as well as feedback on the teams' ideas. The team's first responsibility once it is formed is to interview its client to develop an understanding of the project goals and requirements. Make sure you alot some time in the first weeks of the semester to answer questions and provide feedback. Your continuing input will be essential to the team's success. Please try to leave as many design decisions up to the team rather than dictating the form of the solutions. Discuss your needs and requirements and remain open to innovative and outside-the-box ideas.

We also ask you attend the project plan presentations and the final report presentations (Click on Industrial review panel). We run live interactive webcasts for clients who live out of town.
